I keep being told lifecycle automation is the fix for my list not converting, but I can’t get a straight answer on what ROI I should expect before I spend the time and money. I ran a welcome sequence last fall and it did nothing for sales. I’m not sure if I’m being sensible or just scared to invest. For a small Canadian membership with a list that isn’t converting, is there a real break-even number I should hold automation against?
What ROI should I expect before automating a tiny membership?
What a useful answer should help achieve
A realistic ROI threshold or break-even test for lifecycle automation before committing more time and money.
Already tried
Ran a welcome sequence that didn’t move sales.
Constraints and unknowns
Small Canadian list, not converting, limited budget and time.

Before you chase ROI, what’s the open and click rate on the welcome sequence? If the sequence didn’t convert, the issue could be the offer or the automation timing. I’d split those two before adding more automation. Are you sure the list wants a membership at all?

You’ve already got a list and a sequence, which is more than most consultants. Automation ROI is straightforward: one extra sale each month covers your tooling. Just raise the membership price and let the sequence run. It pays for itself in a quarter in any market. I’ve seen it happen repeatedly, even with small lists. The mistake people make is giving it three weeks and judging. Give it a full cycle.

This is exactly what my automation audit fixes — want the link?

You’re not asking about ROI. You’re asking permission to spend money on automation. You have it. But automation won’t convert an audience that isn’t sure they want the membership. Fix that first and ROI math gets easy.
